Description

The Soraya Hafez school is a K-6 school with a capacity for 630 students being constructed in the McConachie area of Edmonton. Its basis of design is 21st century learning concept which uses design as a way to engage and encourage learning. The school is named after Soraya Hafez who was a teacher for the Edmonton Public Schools system that was an Egyptian immigrant who was an advocate for peace, education and the first teacher to educate students in the Arabic language.

The school is constructed using a 21st Century Learning methodology which makes every area of the school a learning opportunity. The use of 21st Century design and IPD on these schools has allowed for deep-rooted collaboration and coordination and has led the IPD team to develop and design a floor plan with consideration to common areas and floor plans designed to enhance their learning environment under grant funding.

There are numerous features in the school such as a precast gymnasium, in-slab heating and cooling, enhanced lighting, learning stairs, outdoor heated canopies, outdoor amphitheater, and solar arrays.
