Edmonton Catholic Schools Joan Carr K-9 School Completion
This September, Joan Carr Catholic school welcomed students into their brand-new building. With roughly 82,000 square feet of space this K-9 school has the capacity to accommodate up to 930 students. Joan Carr was thoughtfully designed and beautifully built with a learning commons, two gymnasium facilities, and in-floor heating for the kindergarten classrooms.
The learning commons boasts floor to ceiling windows and a learning staircase as a feature in the center of the school. Sister Principal Michelle Koshka describes the learning commons a “shift from a library as a physical space with a repository of books to an inclusive and flexible learning center for collaboration, inquiry, imagination, and play, to expand and deepen learning.”
Since the school was turned over to Alberta Infrastructure and the Edmonton Catholic School Board, Joan Carr has welcomed Kindergarten to Grade 7 students for the 2022-2023 school year. The building has facilitated space for this community of students to learn how to make yogurt bowls in the kitchen, perform Indigenous dances and celebrations in the gym, and for students to connect and build lifelong friendships throughout the halls.
Not only did our project team, along with our Design-Build partner Workun Garrick Partnership Architecture and Interior Design, deliver a beautiful building for these students, we've created a space where a young community will flourish.
